1) APHA AWARD
APHA gives out annual awards to individuals and organisations who have made outstanding contributions in the field of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Asia Pacific region. These awards will be given out during the annual Asia Pacific Heart Congress.
2) APHA CARDIOLOGY FELLOWSHIP TRAINING AWARD
APHA provides Cardiology Fellowship Training awards to cardiologists from the Asia Pacific region. Currently, we provide fellowship training awards to cardiologists from Indonesia and China.
INDONESIA:
Indonesian Heart Association (IHA) had approached APHA to provide fellowship training positions for its Cardiologists. APHA has given out a Training Award to Dr Jajang Sinardja for an Interventional Cardiology training program at An Zhen Hospital in Beijing, China.
CHINA:
APHA in collaboration with the National University Heart Centre Singapore (NUHCS) will launch APHA Fellowship Training award for cardiologists in China in 2011. This program is made possible by an educational grant from Lee Foundation, a philanthropic organization in Singapore. There will be 5 APHA-NUHCS Lee Foundation Cardiology Fellowship Training Awards available with training attachment at the National University Heart Centre in Singapore. OTHERS:
APHA is willing to expand the Cardiology Fellowship Training program to other countries in the Asia Pacific region if there is a demand for such training program. Hospitals and organizations can write in to the Secretariat giving details as to the type of training that will be required for their cardiologists.
Criteria
- Applicants must be a cardiologists or cardiologist trainee as recognized by the national or local accreditation bodies.
- Applicants must be an APHA Fellow.
- Applicants must meet the Singapore Medical Council requirements for English Language Proficiency:
Any foreign-trained doctor who possesses a basic medical degree from a medical school where the medium of instruction is not in the English Language must submit evidence of proficiency in English Language. Such evidence in the form of either the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or Occupational English Test (OET) before the SMC considers the doctor's application for medical registration, including an application to extend period of registration. The doctor must achieve the following minimum score:
- IELTS - at least 7 for EACH component (Listening, Reading, Writing AND Speaking)
- TOEFL - 250 marks for computer-based test or 600 marks for paper-based test or 100 marks for internet-based test
- OET - Grade B and above
Doctors who apply for temporary registration (as Clinical Observers) for training attachment do not need to submit English test results. However, the doctor will NOT be allowed to:
- be involved in primary management of patients; and
- prescribe treatment.
Clinical Observers are only allowed to perform procedures under the direct supervision of the appointed supervisor only.
- Applicants must complete the Application Form made available through the Asia Pacific Heart Association website.
- All applications will be reviewed by the joint committee of APHA and NUHC. Successful applicants will be notified by a formal letter.
In addition to the training provided at NUHCS, a training award of S$25,000 will be given to trainees on a one-year program and S$15,000 award for trainees on a 6 months program.
